Definition of "Diabetic hypoglycemia"

Diabetic hypoglycemia is hypoglycemia (low BSL's) occurring in a patient with DM. It is 1 of the most common types of hypoglycemia seen in ED's and hospitals.

Pathophysiology
  • It occurs when a Tx to lower the elevated BSL of diabetes, inaccurately matches the body's physiological need, and thus causes the BSL to fall to a below-normal level
Epidemiology
  • Between 2004-2005, an estimated 55.8k cases (8% of total admissions) involved insulin, and severe hypoglycemia is likely the single most common event
